Garden Lighting Can Be Both Pretty and Practical

Chances are, you have spent a lot of time and money creating a beautiful garden at your home. With the installation of garden lighting, you can extend the amount of time you spend in the outdoors – no more heading inside just because the sun goes down. Whether you flip a switch or put them on a special timer, outdoor lighting can help your garden transition from day to evening use.

With the right lighting, your garden will transform itself into a magical place that looks totally different that it does in the daylight. Special trees can be highlighted from below, or wrapped in hundreds of tiny white lights. Soft lights shining on white blooming plants make them appear to glow. A spotlight can be used to throw shadows against the wall in interesting patterns. A row of path lights disappearing around a corner beckons you to come find out where it is going.

The safety of you and your family is a very practical reason for installing garden lighting. You don’t want to be stumbling around in the dark, tripping over things or stepping on your expensive plants. Well-placed lights can outline the driveway and the walkway to the front door. Service areas can be brightly lit with flood lighting.

Deterring intruders is probably the single most important reason for adding lights to your garden areas. Criminals like to sneak around in dark places where they can’t be seen. A house that is completely dark, especially if it is surrounded by dense shrubs or trees, is a criminal’s idea of an easy target. If you add lights that burn from dusk to dawn, they will most likely skip your house and go looking for a better place to hide.

As garden lighting has become more popular, it has also become more widely available, and less expensive. Not that many years ago, it was only used by those who could afford to hire electricians and lighting specialists. Now, you can pick up a box of solar lights or inexpensive low-voltage lights in the superstores and install them yourselves in a weekend.

Look around your own garden, and I’m sure you will find something worthy of highlighting. At the very least, make sure the path from the driveway to the door is well lit for the safety of both your family and your guests.
