In some streets around about the end of November, garden lighting features that have been prominent all year are suddenly completely overtaken by outdoor Christmas lights. Some neighbors seem to be in competition with each other as to who can produce the best display. Taken to the extreme, some homes and gardens are completely covered with Christmas lighting of all types, making a fantastic, traffic-stopping spectacle.
LED outdoor Christmas lights are emerging as the most popular choice, not least because they can save you as much as ninety percent of the electricity costs of using normal light bulbs. This also means that unlike normal incandescent light bulbs, they do not give off lots of heat – which has, in the past, caused house fires when home-owners got over-enthusiastic with their outdoor festive lighting displays!
Sets of LED lights are inexpensive and hard wearing and once you have purchased a set, it is easy to store away until needed again. These lights do not contain filaments which always used to burn through in traditional lights. They do not break easily and can withstand quite a few knocks with no problems and seem to be completely impervious to cold and wet making them suitable for use almost anywhere in the world.
Sets of lights are available in single colors, multicolors or clear. They can be little tiny bulbs, that give single points of light or can have shaped casings – snowflakes, snowmen or santas for example. In addition they can be in strings or as nets of lights which can look equally good attached to the wall of your home or draped over garden shrubs. Further, there is a choice between static lights or lights that dance and flicker in patterns or chaser lights where the colored light seems to run along the whole length of the display.
You do not have to store away your LED outdoor Christmas lights until next Christmas though. They look so pretty when used to decorate the garden for parties and barbecues at any time of the year. Chains of outdoor LED lights can also be used to very romantic effect in the bedroom where they complement soft candlelight beautifully – though I guess for this purpose you would not want to choose lights shaped as jolly Santas – little stars might be more appropriate!
